Most of our customers are not aware of key programming, they will state that the only thing they need is a key cut and not programmed. Well now days we are sorry to inform you but most vehicles are equipped with an immobilizer system.
I went to The Home Depot, they copied my key but it doesn’t start the car!
Very common issue. Well first off we would not recommend anybody to get keys made in home depot because half of the time they do not work. They are not locksmiths nor have professional key copying equipment. The reason the keys from your local hardware store do not start your vehicle is because the are not programmed. Either they cut a transponder key for you and didn’t clone it correctly, or they cut a key without a transponder.
Our car key programming specialists are able to clone and program most makes and models that are being sold in the US. Car key programming requires special equipment and set of skills in order to complete the task successfully. Our car locksmith techs will come to your location and provide you with exceptional service and we will get you going.
Why does a key need to be programmed?
In most vehicles from the year 2000 there is an anti-theft security. The key has an electromagnetic chip that is located in the plastic head of the key. This chip holds information which will be detected by the “receptor” located around the vehicles ignition lock cylinder and from there the signal will be transferred to the cars computer for translation. Once the cars computer (ECU) ensures that the information that has been provided by the key is correct, it will allow certain engine components to run, such as the fuel pump, starter, fuel injectors and so on.
How do i know if i have a chip in my key?
Well, if your car is 14 years old or younger, there is a good chance that the car key programming steps will need to be taken. Also, most keys that are equipped with a transponder chip have a larger “head” (must of the time thick black plastic head of the key) which acts as a protector to the transponder chip.
NOTICE THE KEY WITH THE BLACK HEAD IS EQUIPPED WITH A TRANSPONDER
If you are not sure if your car is equipped with anti-theft security please call and ask one of our car locksmith techs.
